BARNACLE GEESE, MERSEHEAD

Without a breath of wind, the large marsh ponds were like mirrors as a day spent day photographing Barnacle Geese at Mersehead, on the Scottish side of the Solway Firth, came to a close. Every year, the geese visit the area in their tens of thousands to overwinter here in the UK.

I watched several flocks of geese moving from the fields in great numbers to roost on the mud flats, but I wanted the sky to change at sunset before shooting this particular scene. I caught this large group of geese flying down to roost in the far distance, with the clouds above them looking like ink blots perfectly reflected in the still water."
